Ugh! The battle of the screen. As a single mom of two boys, I know this struggle all too well. I’ll be the first to admit—I’ve been guilty of letting my kids spend too much time glued to their iPads. They’re active boys who love playing outside and participating in sports, but given the chance, they would spend hours immersed in their screens.

Like most parents, I’m always searching for ways to get my kids off their devices and out doing something meaningful. And I know I’m not alone. The frantic search for camps, activities, and outdoor adventures is a constant cycle for many of us, especially as we try to strike a balance between work, parenting, and ensuring our kids have a well-rounded childhood.

One of the most shocking things I discovered this year was how little movement my middle schooler was getting. The entire first semester, he didn’t have P.E., and since his school doesn’t offer recess, he was literally sitting at a computer all day. I couldn’t believe it! As a personal trainer and someone who deeply values a healthy, active lifestyle, I know how important it is for kids to move, explore, and engage with the world beyond a screen.

That’s why I was thrilled to help lead the first-ever summer camp at Empower Adventures. This camp is designed to do exactly what we all want for our kids—get them moving, challenge them with new experiences, and let them rediscover the joy of being outdoors. Through activities like zip lining, obstacle courses, paddleboarding, and adventure races, kids will build confidence, teamwork, and a love for adventure—all while breaking free from their screens.
